Help us improve pedestrian access to Yosemite Rec Center

Campus Road provides a vital car-free connection for Eagle Rock residents to travel between the Occidental College neighborhood and Yosemite Recreation Center, Eagle Rock Junior/Senior High School, and other destinations in the community. However, outdated barriers installed decades ago make the gate inaccessible to people pushing child strollers and bicycles. Redesigning this entry point will allow more neighbors to avoid lengthy detours for walking and biking between these important Eagle Rock destinations.

Community Walk: Exploring Housing, History, & Transit

Join The Eagle Rock Association (TERA), Abundant Housing LA, Eastside Housing for All for an Urban Hike through Eagle Rock! This 4-mile walk will explore Eagle Rock’s evolving landscape, housing history, and transit future. We will stop at key sites including a small lot subdivision, a controversial ED1 project, Occidental College, and the future Colorado Boulevard BRT route.

What You Will Learn at This Event:

1: How exclusionary zoning, ED1 streamlining, and local tenant protections shape Northeast LA.

2: The potential for building affordable housing on faith lands (SB 4) and reviving neighborhood corner stores.

3: Immediate ways to organize with Eastside Housing for All and TERA to advocate for transit-oriented communities.

Route & Accessibility Note: This hike includes a steep, unpaved trail over Fiji Hill. Attendees who prefer to skip the steep climb can proceed directly to the Oxy FEAST garden to rest and meet back up with the group. Please wear sturdy shoes and bring plenty of water!

Public Space Committee

This committee explores opportunities for new projects like park activations, pocket parks, and other public space improvements around Eagle Rock, while continuing and expanding TERA’s ongoing work on safety initiatives like Slow Yosemite and Rock the Boulevard.

Connectivity to & Activation of Existing Parks

TERA is working to strengthen the role of our existing parks — Eagle Rock and Yosemite Rec Centers — as vital community hubs. This committee is exploring ways to increase access and connectivity to these parks, making them more inviting for all Eagle Rock residents. These efforts include simple programming and activation strategies that can bring neighbors together here and help these spaces to serve the diverse needs of our community.

Pocket Parks & Pop-Up Public Space

TERA is also working to identify opportunities to create permanent or temporary small-scale “pocket parks” in underutilized spaces throughout Eagle Rock. Mini-parks or pop-up parks can serve as neighborhood gathering spots, provide respite in dense areas, and contribute to the overall livability of our community. By reimagining vacant lots, awkward corners, underutilized parking, and other unused spaces, we can increase access to nature, seating, shade, and recreation space.

Safer and More Walkable Streets & Sidewalks

Eagle Rock’s walkability is central to our neighborhood character, and this committee is continuing TERA’s ongoing work to make our streets and sidewalks safer and more accessible. We are working to identify priority areas with existing safety issues and/or potential funding sources to make the biggest impact on street safety and comfort. This work will build on TERA’s ongoing Rock The Boulevard and Slow Yosemite initiatives, extending safe and accessible street design throughout Eagle Rock. By creating a more connected network of safe and pleasant walking and biking routes, we can enable active transportation, support local businesses, reduce car traffic, and foster the kind of street-level community interactions that make Eagle Rock special.

TERA’s detailed feedback on updated BRT plans

TERA continues to monitor and provide productive feedback on Metro’s North Hollywood to Pasadena Bus Rapid Transit project. In reviewing updated 30% engineering documents, TERA provided detailed feedback urging providing better landscaping elements, better pedestrian access, and safer and more intuitive bicycle facilities. TERA’s Comments on Rock The Boulevard Implementation Options

Over the past three months, the City of Los Angeles has presented three implementation options for bikeway infrastructure of TERA’s Rock The Boulevard project on Eagle Rock Boulevard. TERA prefers Option 2 as the concept that best works towards Rock The Boulevard’s goals of a safer, greener, and more pedestrian-friendly Eagle Rock Boulevard. Option 2 is the option that not only provides the safest and most comfortable space for pedestrians, but also preserves the most on-street parking and most well distributed on-street parking to provide access to our existing local businesses.

TERA further encourages Streets LA to study the community generated “Walkable Boulevard” concept, which would fine-tune Option 2 to allocate portions of unusable median space towards expanded sidewalks, space for new sidewalk trees, and space for Al Fresco dining for local businesses.

As the lead organization behind the Take Back The Boulevard initiative that is focused on Colorado Boulevard, TERA objects to the use of Take Back The Boulevard funds to downgrade the walkability of Colorado Boulevard.

TERA Statement on Noho-Pasadenda BRT

To our members and the Eagle Rock community, TERA officially endorses the Beautiful Boulevard plan to make BRT on Colorado Blvd work for all members of our community. We also believe there must be funding support for our businesses impacted by the project’s construction and a plan to deter potential cut-through traffic in the neighborhood. Take Back the Boulevard

Improvements related to TERA’s Take Back the Boulevard initiative continue to be made along Colorado Boulevard. The City is currently in Phase II of the project which includes street improvements such as new curb ramps and sidewalk repairs.
 
The City recently completed work near the intersection at Colorado Boulevard and Mount Helena Avenue. Depicted in the pictures above is ongoing work at Colorado Boulevard and Floristan Avenue.
 
Take Back the Boulevard, while conceived by TERA, has been a collaborative effort between us, Council District 14, the Los Angeles Bureau of Street Services, the Eagle Rock Neighborhood Council, and the community of Eagle Rock with the end goal of making Colorado Boulevard safer for pedestrians, bicyclists and drivers.

Road Improvements: Wawona & El Roble

Beginning this week the Bureau of Street Services will initiate the final phase of roadway improvements on Wawona Street at El Roble Drive by installing new concrete streets. Lanes may be closed at times.
 
Temporary “No Parking” signs should be posted on the street at least 24 hours before the actual work begins and notices should be provided to residents and businesses impacted by the operation.
 
You should remove your vehicles from the street to protect them from damage by construction debris and to prevent interference with the planned work. The “No Parking” signs should be removed and vehicular parking restored once the project has been completed.

Give Feedback on Slow Streets in Eagle Rock

In March 2020, TERA was approved as a local sponsor for one of the first four “Slow Streets” implementations in Los Angeles. Slow Streets is a temporary program that enables residents to maintain physical distancing during the COVID-19 pandemic. The program has already been very well-received by local residents as it enables access to exercise and fresh air while discouraging aggressive driving at a time when speeding has increased on local streets.
