TERA is spotlighting Eagle Rock small businesses to support our neighborhood’s recovery from the pandemic.

As the holiday season approaches, let’s all make a plan to Shop Local to support our local small businesses that make Eagle Rock so special. This month, we’re highlighting The Green Bean, an 11 year old beloved community institution at the intersection of Eagle Rock Boulevard and Colorado that provides great quality and low cost resale kids items, free events, and a welcoming space for families.

Below is an interview with Jess Castaneda, who has owned and operated The Green Bean for the past four years:

What is one of your favorite items that The Green Bean sells?

My favorite items are the huge assortment of used books that we carry, from board books to young adult.

What is something that you think is a hidden gem in your store or that would be a surprise to most customers?

We carry many products that are made by our customers!  You can find greeting cards, t-shirts, and essential oils made and designed by local parents.

What else do you want to share with the Eagle Rock community?

We are more than just a used kids shop! We carry new toys by sustainable brands, gifts by local makers, and art supplies!

Local Business Spotlight: Muddy Paw Coffee

Cold brew coffee being poured into a reusable glass bottle from a tap

TERA is spotlighting Eagle Rock small businesses to support our neighborhood’s recovery from the pandemic.

This month, we’re featuring Muddy Paw Coffee, a pet-friendly coffee shop that helps support local pet rescue groups. Muddy Paw was founded and is operated by Darren La Borie and Natalia Aldacour, who opened their beloved Eagle Rock location in July 2019.

Below is an interview with co-owner, Natalia Aldacour:

What is the story behind Muddy Paw?

The idea of opening Muddy Paw Coffee came during Katrina, when we decided that we wanted to raise money for local heroes that were doing their best to rescue and save the animals affected by the hurricane. We figured that as a small business our contribution would not make much difference to a big organization like SPCA, so we created Muddy Paw inspired by unsung heroes who are making a difference for animals in their community: where we donate a portion of all of our proceeds to small local rescues and organizations in towns and cities across the country. We developed Muddy Paw as an extension of our roasting company that we have been running for over 29 years.

What are are your favorite drinks that Muddy Paw serves?

This is hard to answer. In Summer… our Cold Brew Espresso Mojito (which does not have alcohol) or the Watermelon Mint Cooler if you want an ice tea drink. Fall brings our Real Pumpkin Spice Latte and winter we will serve up our Smoked Maple Bourbon Cortado. All of our drinks are made from scratch with natural ingredients.

What is something that you think is a hidden gem of your menu or would be a surprise to most customers?

We roast our own coffee different from most coffee shops and are known for our dark roast. Since we do not have a middle man, our coffee is always fresh and bagged in house. We usually cycle coffee through our shop within a week or two. Also we have a signature Cold Brew Espresso that takes us 3 days to make which delivers a… SMOOOOTH…. yet dark, rich, and bold flavor.

What else do you want to share with the Eagle Rock community?

Please know that a portion of everything you buy in our store goes back to animal rescues in the LA area that are making a difference in our community. Our menu is mainly VEGAN yet we have items for all! All of our drinks are base vegan but we can accommodate all other needs, same goes to our pastries and we also cater to customers that have gluten intolerance too. WE LOVE IT HERE! We knew we would be happy coming, but the last 18 months have been challenging to say the least, especially since we opened right before the pandemic.. and we could not have made it without this amazing community that has embraced us from day one. Lastly, stay tuned for Jazz nights once a month and other amazing events that raise money and awareness to local animal organizations.. yes you can bring your pup as your date. šŸ™‚

šŸ¦… ā˜• šŸ•

Muddy Paw Coffee is a local gem in Eagle Rock with exceptional coffee, unique drinks, tasty snacks, plenty of outdoor seating, and (often) some very good pups to meet!

Local Business Spotlight: Malbec Argentinean Cuisine

A wood cutting board with small bites of food

TERA is spotlighting Eagle Rock small businesses to support our neighborhood’sĀ recovery from the pandemic.

For September 2021, we’re featuring Malbec Argentinean Cuisine, an Argentinean restaurant founded by brothers Luciano and Pablo Alcorta, and headquartered in Eagle Rock since 2016, with a second location in Pasadena.

Originally founded in 2007 with a family’s dream and a Small Business Administration loan, Malbec focuses on the unique combination of Spanish, Italian, and Creole influences that makes Argentinean cuisine. Below is an interview with co-owner, Luciano Alcorta:

What is your favorite place in Eagle Rock?Ā

The food scene in Eagle Rock is growing, we have really good places to bring people to Eagle Rock and for the locals to enjoy. Milkfarm is amazing, Leah Park Fierro’s store is very unique and the quality of cheeses she offers are outstanding. We also have our wonderful neighbors, The Fable, an icon like The Oinkster, and the recently opened Lucky Bird. We are extremely happy and proud to be in a community like Eagle Rock.

What is one of your favorite dishes that Malbec serves?

It varies because I love the menus we have in both locations, Eagle Rock as well as Pasadena, since they are different. At the moment I love the Tortilla de Papa (Potato quiche), a Spanish dish which is very popular in Argentina. We served it with a Chorizo Colorado, my brother Pablo—who is the chef and also my partner—created all the sausage recipes we serve in both locations. Our most popular dishes in Malbec Market are Cuadril Sandwich (Ciabatta, roasted top sirloin, caramelized onion, gorgonzola cheese, tomato & arugula, pesto aioli), empanadas (We offer five different flavors) and Entrana.

What would you say to customers that have never tried Argentinean wine before?

Argentineans are passionate about food: for us food equals sharing a moment with people we love; is a moment to slow down and catch up with friends and family.

In our food we have a big influence from Spain, Italy as well as Creole. Even though the most common food item people know about Argentina’s food is steak (which is great), it goes beyond that: we have amazing pastas, pizzas, and pastries in every city. In Patagonia
—which is where my brother and I are from—we have amazing lamb.

What else do you want to share with Eagle Rock?Ā

Since we opened, our goal was to make Eagle Rock the brain of our company. In our Eagle Rock commissary kitchen, we prepare all our homemade pastas, and age our beef that is served in both locations. Desserts are prepared and developed here as well. My brother is always pushing to improve our food quality and create new recipes.

We also offer a wine dinner whenever we have winemakers, winery owners or export managers from Argentina coming to town. These special menus are completely different from what we usually offer. My brother enjoys putting a menu together to pair with the wines. He plays a lot with ingredients and develops great menus for these events.

šŸ¦…

With a diverse menu that ranges from aged steaks to Spanish tortilla de papas to sandwiches to Argentinean-style pasta and pizza, Malbec is a natural crowd-pleaser right here in Eagle Rock. Give Malbec a try for lunch or dinner and experience the joy of Argentinean cuisine!

TERA is spotlighting Eagle Rock small businesses to support our neighborhood’sĀ recovery from the pandemic.

For August 2021, we’re featuring Super Copy, which has been serving Eagle Rock since 1994. Below is an an interview with Super Copy’s owner, Payam Ayazi:

What is your favorite place in Eagle Rock?Ā

There are so many places to choose from! Whether it’s a restaurant, coffee shop, bar, or retail shop. I love supporting the local shops and businesses here. I would have to say my new favorite place is Relentless. That place has great food, tasty drinks and a fun vibe!

What is one of your favorite services that you provide?

Booklets, catalogs and zines are my favorites! We have invested a lot in some top quality printing and finishing equipment. Several years ago, we used to have to outsource our orders and projects. Now we can do it all in-house with higher quality and quicker turnaround time. Our clients are ecstatic when we meet their deadlines and budgets while maintaining amazing quality.

What items or services do you provide that might be a surprise to new customers?

We could do everything from printing large orders of magazines, or doing custom roll labels and even packaging products! There is so much that can be done and it’s fun to be able to work with clients on special projects and finding the best printing solutions.

What else do you want to share with Eagle Rock?Ā

Honestly, we are extremely grateful for our clientele and the Eagle Rock community. This last year has been really challenging for us, and for so many other businesses. And it means a lot to see the familiar faces that have been supporting us over the years, not only in business but in building relations and friendships with the community. We are humbled and we sincerely thank you!
